The heavy thunderstorms on Friday night also caused train routes to be blocked: 500 passengers were stranded at the Unzmarkt train station in Upper Styria after fallen trees paralyzed the southern railway line. The Red Cross provided the 500 stranded passengers with drinking water and snacks and sweets for the children.
Due to a defective overhead line and track blockades as a result of the heavy thunderstorm, there was nothing going on in the evening at the Unzmarkt and the adjacent train stations of Carinthia Friesach. More than 200 people had to be taken by bus from Friesach to Unzmarkt to continue their journey to Vienna from there.
Passengers were stuck for hours
More than 300 people were stuck in the Unzmarkt station itself and had to wait up to four hours for their onward journey. Seven employees and an emergency doctor with two ambulances, the command vehicle and an emergency doctor’s vehicle were present until the night hours.
Even households without electricity
The heavy storm not only damaged overhead lines, but also toppled electricity pylons. Numerous households in the districts of Weiz, Bruck-Mürzzuschlag and Leoben were still without power on Saturday morning.
