The Secret Service, which has come under heavy criticism, has pledged its cooperation to an independent investigation into the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Director Kimberly Cheatle is aware of the importance of the review ordered by President Joe Biden and will “fully participate in it.”
The Secret Service is working with those involved at all levels “to understand what happened, how it happened and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever happening again,” Cheatle said.
The agency is responsible for the security of presidents, former presidents and presidential candidates and reports to the Department of Homeland Security. Biden said in an interview that he felt “safe” with the Secret Service.
Shame on the Secret Service
Trump narrowly survived the attack during a campaign rally in the US state of Pennsylvania on Saturday. The former president was slightly wounded in the ear by a bullet.
In addition to the suspected shooter, a spectator – a 50-year-old firefighter and father – was also killed and two other men in the audience were seriously injured.
A huge failure looms
Biden ordered a sweeping investigation into the security measures at the event after the incident. The Secret Service has been under mounting pressure to explain how the shooter was able to position himself on a rooftop some 450 feet (137 meters) away from one of the world’s most heavily protected politicians.
After the attack, phone recordings emerged of people trying to warn security forces about the shooter. After analyzing videos from the scene, the Washington Post reported that the shots at Trump were fired 86 seconds after the first audible warnings to police. Other US media reported the first warnings at least two minutes before the first shot.
Safety is increased
Cheatle announced that security would be increased again for Trump at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which began Monday. The Secret Service is drawing up plans for major events “to respond to the latest intelligence,” Cheatle said.
