Highly Contagious! – Climate Activists: Prison Term Ends with Nasty Disease

Date:

After more than a month, the last two prisoners of the Last Generation – Anja Windl and Laila Fuisz – were released on Tuesday from the police detention center in Rossauer Lände in Vienna. The two young women had previously participated in gluing work. Because they could not pay the fines, they began serving alternative prison sentences in early June.

It has now been 42 days since Windl and Fuisz began their prison sentences in Vienna. On Tuesday, the time had finally come: the two activists were finally allowed to leave the police detention centre in Rossauer Lände. But what happened to the women in the cell?

Received a frightening diagnosis
“It is almost impossible to be taken seriously here. “We were increasingly bothered by very itchy rashes,” Anja Windl reports about the poor conditions. Windl and Fuisz had to seek medical treatment for several weeks until finally a diagnosis was made at the general hospital: scabies.

A total of 12 people were sick, including civil servants. “The actions of the executive branch here seem seriously questionable,” Windl continued. In the adjacent cell, for example, was a minor who was arrested by police and locked up for fare evasion. In another cell was a mother who was taken away in front of her children for parking illegally.

Choose resistance again
But despite all her experience, Windl knows one thing for sure: she would choose the resistance again at any time. ‘I know why I’m here. The news of entire villages with destroyed roofs, deaths from floods or hurricanes also reached us in prison. These deaths are victims of our fossil comfort. In short: it sucks here, but doing nothing is even worse.’

Big protest on July 27 in Schwechat
The activist also stresses that the protests will continue until the Nehammer government starts to address the enshrinement of the fundamental right to climate protection.

In addition, Last Generation had previously announced massive disruptions at airports with globally coordinated protests for July 27.
