Several injured – after hammer attack: victim stable, taken into custody

Date:

After a hammer attack by a 29-year-old seriously injured three people, the Vienna Regional Court on Thursday issued a pre-trial detention order for the 29-year-old suspect. As announced by court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn, the reason was believed to be a risk of committing a crime. The Serb will remain in custody until August 1. One of the victims, whose life was sometimes in danger, could be transferred to a normal ward.

The condition of the man (51) is now stable, reports the Vienna Health Association. His life is therefore not in danger, according to a spokeswoman. The 51-year-old suffered such serious injuries in the attack two days ago that the emergency services had to intubate and ventilate him on the spot.

The other two victims – a 43-year-old and a 39-year-old – were also said to be in stable condition on Thursday.

Legal assistance requested
According to spokeswoman Salzborn, the 29-year-old said during questioning by the court on Thursday morning that he had been “attacked.” The man had also applied for legal aid, it was said.

I attacked the group with a hammer
The accused 29-year-old Serb attacked the group with a hammer on Meiselstrasse in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district on Tuesday around 12:10, stealing two of their bags and then fleeing. Witnesses alerted the police. Officers then arrested the suspect on the spot and confiscated the bags and the hammer.

When questioned by police, the 29-year-old refused to make a statement. The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department, West Division, is now investigating the case.
