The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenreceived the confidence of the European parliament to continue the function for another five years, thanks to the support from 401 MEPs in a chamber with 720 seats. Von der Leyen had to add at least 361 of the 720 seats in the chamber to obtain an extension.

The head of the community manager has managed to repeat the existing coalition popular, socialist and liberal who already supported his candidacy in 2019, which together is good for 401 seats, in addition to winning the support from the greenswho decided at the last minute to vote for von der Leyen despite lowering her environmental claims in order to soften the influence of the far right on EU policy.

In 2019When the majority was 374 MEPs, von der Leyen achieved a very reasonable approval with 383 votes in favour, 327 against and 22 abstentions.

Minutes before the vote, the far-right group Conservatives and Reformists (ECR)led by the Brothers of Italy of the Transalpine Prime Minister, Giorgia Melonihas confirmed that a majority of members would vote against by Von der Leyen, although it left the way open for delegations who wanted to support it.

For its part, the group of Patriots for Europepromoted by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and the Left They kept their promise to reject the German’s re-election as head of the Community Executive.
