The storm disaster in Upper Styria also destroyed the access road to the Voisthalerhütte in the Hochschwab area. The food supply is becoming difficult – now the “lard” of the hikers is also in demand.
That’s what you call a blessing in disguise: “We were able to take part in a supply flight to the Schiestlhaus at short notice on Thursday,” reports Lieselotte Schleicher, one of the two landladies from the Voisthalerhütte in the Hochschwab region.
She was able to bring a lot of food to the mountain by helicopter, including 400 eggs.
The approximately four-kilometre-long access road to the cable car, which otherwise guarantees supplies, has already been damaged twice this year – and is now largely destroyed in the aftermath of the catastrophic storm on Wednesday night. Schleicher: “We cannot estimate how long the renovation will take. “But we do not want to have priority, the people whose homes are affected are more important,” Schleicher emphasises.
We are well prepared for the next two weeks, but after that it can become problematic: “We therefore ask hikers to bring something with them, we are especially happy with fresh fruit and vegetables.”
Hut is undamaged
The new futuristic-designed hut, which opened just two years ago, is undamaged. Even hail could not damage the photovoltaic system on the roof. Schleicher: “That was a test. The house held up perfectly.”
The hiking trails are also in surprisingly good condition. Only the Ochsensteig is closed, although that has been the case since a mudslide occurred earlier this month.
