New storm front – New alarm for civil defense in Western Styria

Date:

Unfortunately, the series of heavy storms in Styria continues on Friday. Caution is particularly high in the Voitsberg district. A civil protection alert was issued for the communities of Edelschrott, Krottendorf-Gaisfeld and St. Martin am Wöllmißberg, but this has now been lifted.

Thunderstorm fronts have been moving through Styria since the afternoon. The first hotspot was the Judenburg area, where numerous floods and fire brigade operations took place. The Pölstal was particularly affected. According to a spokesman for the fire brigade, there is currently no catastrophic damage. But the missions are still ongoing.

Civil defense alarm in three communities
The focus is on the Voitsberg district, in particular on three communities that had been declared disaster areas the week before: St. Martin am Wöllmißberg, Edelschrott and Krottendorf-Gaisfeld. A civil protection alert was issued here due to the threat of flooding: the population was asked to avoid cellars and underground car parks and to seek safety.

Shortly before 19:30, area fire chief Christian Leitgeb was able to cautiously give the signal: fortunately, the predicted amounts of rain had not yet arrived and no fire brigade had to be deployed. Leitgeb hoped that the civil protection alarm would be lifted quickly. At 19:45, it was time: the state warning center gave permission!

Not everything is clear yet
The storms in Styria are expected to abate during the night. Saturday will cool down and there is a chance of heavy rain again. There is no sign that everything is safe; the emergency services, already working at their limits, are still in high demand.

More than 400 helpers in Aflenz and Thörl
For example, in the two communities in Upper Styria, Thörl and Aflenz, where the storm disaster occurred on Wednesday night. As many as 406 people were there on Friday to repair damage. Firefighters from Mürzzuschlag, Knittelfeld, Radkersburg and Fürstenfeld arrived, as did many private helpers.

Preventive work was also carried out: in Bruck, 1,000 sandbags are now available that can be used in the event of new flooding. Slopes were secured with tarpaulins.
