Bloody act at school: 16-year-old convicted of murdering classmate

Date:

In the trial surrounding the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in a classroom in Offenburg, Germany, last November, the regional court there sentenced the suspect to eight years and nine months of juvenile detention. The juvenile chamber found the 16-year-old guilty of murder and attempted aggravated arson behind closed doors, the court announced.

The chamber found it proven that the teenager came to school in the state of Baden-Württemberg on November 9, 2023 with a pistol, ammunition and a home-made incendiary device and shot his classmate there.

Student wanted to set the school on fire
He was innocent and defenseless during the attack, so the perpetrator acted treacherously. The accused student also tried to light the incendiary device to set the school building on fire.

The weapon came from the parents’ household
The violent death of the pupil of the Waldbach special education school also caused grief and consternation in the entire region. According to the investigation, the perpetrator, a German, had 41 cartridges with him. The weapon used in the crime came from the parents’ household.

A father, who was at the school during the attack for a parent-teacher meeting, overpowered the attacker and probably prevented something worse from happening. He was later recognized for his heroic efforts.

According to previous information from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the maximum sentence in the case was ten years. In Germany, young people aged 14 and over are criminally liable. Juvenile punishment is a form of imprisonment that is specially regulated for young people and adolescents.

Motive still unclear after verdict
A motive for the violent act was not clear even after the verdict; there was talk in circles of jealousy after the crime. The trial in the juvenile chamber of the court has been going on since mid-April. Including the announcement of the verdict, the trial lasted twelve days, a spokeswoman for the court reports. Visitors and representatives of the media were not allowed during the entire duration due to the protection of minors. According to earlier information, the young person is in custody.
