On the Pyhrnautobahn in Traboch, Upper Styria, a truck completely burned out on Wednesday. The Hungarian driver was able to get to safety in time, but the vehicle was a total loss.
The driver of the truck loaded with poppy bags, a 48-year-old Hungarian, said that he heard a loud noise shortly before the fire broke out. Then he saw smoke coming from the side mirror. He parked the vehicle in time on the hard shoulder (towards Linz) and was able to leave the driver’s cab unharmed.
Highway closed for a short time
The flames spread quickly from the driver’s cabin to the trailer and the truck was completely engulfed in flames. The highway had to be closed in both directions for fifteen minutes due to the heavy smoke. No fewer than six fire brigades were deployed and comrades from Traboch-Timmersdorf fought the fire with heavy breathing apparatus.
After the fire was extinguished, the truck had to be unloaded for rescue work. Due to the extensive cleaning work and the recovery of the tractor-trailer, the motorway towards Linz remained closed until early in the evening.
