Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov, in office since May, has been tasked with maintaining order in the military leadership and purging corrupt elements from the ministry’s ranks. In recent weeks and months, several senior officials of the department have been arrested in corruption investigations. Now, former Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov has been handcuffed.
An investigation into his “illegal activities” is underway, Russia’s state news agency RIA reported Friday, citing the domestic intelligence service FSB. Bulgakov was taken to a detention center in Moscow.
He was in charge of military logistics until his release in September 2022. He is the latest in a series of high-ranking people at the Ministry of Defence to be accused of corruption.
Long series of arrests
The crackdown on corruption at the highest levels began on April 23 – before Belousov took office – with the arrest of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, a close ally of former minister Sergei Shoigu. At least five military and defense officials have been arrested since then
