Open provocation – Russian ship enters Finnish waters

Date:

According to Finnish sources, against the background of increasing tensions on the Finnish-Russian border, a Russian reconnaissance vessel illegally entered the Finnish maritime area. Attempts to contact him failed several times.

The Russian reconnaissance vessel “Mikhail Kazansky” crossed the outer border of Finnish territorial waters east of Helsinki early Tuesday afternoon, the Coast Guard said.

The aircraft travelled 1.2 nautical miles and left Finnish waters after seven minutes, the report said. A coast guard patrol boat tried several times to contact the Russian vessel without success. The incident is under investigation, the Finnish defence ministry said.

Tensions between Helsinki and Moscow
Finnish-Russian relations have deteriorated significantly since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. As a result of Russia’s war of aggression, Helsinki gave up its decades-long freedom of alliances and joined NATO in April 2023.

According to Finnish sources, four Russian state planes entered Finnish airspace for two minutes without permission in June. Because hundreds of migrants arrived at the Finnish-Russian border without visas last fall, Helsinki closed the 1,340-kilometer border with Russia in December. Helsinki accused Moscow of deliberately smuggling people to the border and of trying to create a migration crisis in Finland. Russia denies the accusations.

Kremlin: British fighter jets intercepted
Meanwhile, Russia says it sent an Su-57 fighter jet to intercept two British fighter pilots and a reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea. The Defense Ministry in Moscow said the British military plane then moved away from the Russian border.
