When the luxury yacht Bayesian sinks off the coast of Sicily, a German captain becomes a hero, saving 15 of the 23 people on board. Rescue services continue to search for the missing persons
“We woke up to thunder, lightning and waves. It felt like the end of the world,” says Charlotte Golunski (35), who was on board the luxury yacht Bayesian with her family. A tornado caused the boat to capsize off the coast of Sicily on Monday. The body of a man was recovered. Six people are still missing, including the yacht’s owner: Mike Lynch, a British tycoon.

Ship disappeared after storm
For 15 people, there was a happy ending. “When the storm passed, we noticed that the ship had disappeared behind us. My first officer and I went for the point,” explains German captain Karsten Börner, now celebrated as a hero. He and his crew took in the castaways, some of whom were seriously injured.
The wreck currently lies on the seabed at a depth of 49 meters. Searches for the missing are being conducted by diving units and helicopters. A team of interpreters and psychologists were deployed to assist the survivors.
A fisherman also observed the tragic sinking of the Bayesian: “I looked out to sea and saw the boat. I saw it suddenly sink.”
