The Villach fire brigade had to carry out three missions at once on Thursday evening. They were not fighting fire, but water in the Villach LKH – with pumps, windshield wipers and vacuum cleaners.
On Thursday shortly before 5:00 p.m., the automatic fire alarm system of the Villach State Hospital triggered an alarm. According to the internal alarm plan, a complete fire brigade from the Villach main fire station was deployed. After a short investigation on site, fortunately no fire was found, but extensive water damage was found in the basement of the radiology department and in a wing of the hospital that was currently being renovated.
Equipment was immediately requested. The cause was determined to be a burst water pipe. The leak was fixed by a plumber.
About 15 firefighters were able to pump out the water in about two hours using a submersible pump and several water suction devices. The operating personnel of the LKH Villach supported this work in an exemplary manner.
“This rapid and massive damage control operation made it possible to prevent serious damage to the important KABEG infrastructure,” said Chief of Operations, Chief Fire Officer Alexander Scharf, platoon commander of the main fire station.
More warnings
During this operation, another team from the main fire station, together with the FF Maria Gail, was called in for safety work after a traffic accident on the B84 Faakerseestrasse. The measures on site were limited to cleaning up and securing the accident site and securing spilled equipment.
Almost simultaneously, a smoke detector in an apartment building in the Auen district triggered an alarm. Fortunately, a security team on site was able to detect a false alarm.
