Opposition leader Edmundo González intervened electronically in the informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers, who agreed not to recognize Maduro but did not agree to recognize any other candidate.
The foreign ministers of the European Union member states have not yet recognised the victory of Nicolás Maduro in the Venezuelan elections, nor that of Edmundo González, of the opposition.
Opposition MP González has intervened electronically in the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council. “There is a consensus that Maduro’s victory will not be recognized, but that does not apply to the recognition of the opposition,” Spanish diplomatic sources said, quoted by EFE.
Spain has done “everything possible to maintain unity”, the sources said, adding that this objective “has been achieved” and has chosen to “intensify dialogue with regional actors, especially with Brazil and Colombia, and to do “everything possible to maintain the physical integrity and civil and political rights of members of the opposition”.
EU foreign ministers also discussed the possibility of imposing sanctions, “but no agreement has been reached”, the diplomatic sources added, underlining that “there is great concern about the deterioration of the political climate and the lack of democratic transparency” in the EU. Venezuela.
