Paragliding accident in the Lilienfeld area of Lower Austria: The 31-year-old pilot from Vienna had to wait for about half an hour before he was rescued.
A paraglider landed in a treetop in the Lilienfeld area on Saturday. According to the mountain rescue service, the 31-year-old pilot had to stay at an altitude of about 20 meters for about half an hour. Seven members of the mountain rescue team and other people eventually came to the man’s aid. The weakened recreational athlete ended the afternoon in the hospital.
Umbrella has collapsed
The Viennese paraglider pilot took off “in midsummer weather and excellent visibility towards the valley,” reported the Lilienfeld mountain rescue service. However, the umbrella later collapsed. The 31-year-old used an emergency parachute, but ended up in the treetop.
Difficult rescue operation
Hikers then heard the man’s cries for help, and other paragliding pilots also became aware of the 31-year-old’s problem. The rescue measures were “very difficult, not only because of the altitude, but also because the trees in this area were very thin,” emphasizes Thomas Bichelhuber, the manager of the Lilienfeld mountain rescue site.
The paraglider pilot is said to have crashed in the affected area in the spring and also got stuck in a tree, according to the Lilienfeld mountain rescue service.
