About two months after the extensive recall of children’s products due to the risk of salmonella, the confectionery company Ferrero is allowed to resume production at its factory in Arlon, Belgium, under certain conditions. Following a clean-up by the owner, the Belgian food safety authority AFSCA decided to “grant Ferrero a conditional license for its production facility in Arlon,” it said Friday. The factory had been closed since April 8.
Shortly before Easter, Ferrero had recalled certain children’s products in Europe due to suspected salmonella, including surprise eggs, chocolate chip cookies and mini eggs. These were chocolate products from the Arlon factory in Belgium, which were sold in France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. According to the company, a filter in a milk-butter barrel was contaminated.
diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps
Authorities in several European countries have linked numerous cases of salmonellosis with the chocolate products. Salmonella can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and is one of the most common food infections. Babies, small children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are especially prone to serious disease progression.
There are at least 14 confirmed cases in Austria. Ten of those affected were children, according to the Agency for Health and Food Security (AGES); five of them had to be treated in hospital.
