Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians have reached a new level. According to Kiev, 41 people were killed in a Russian airstrike on the city of Poltava, in central Ukraine. Several buildings were hit, including a hospital.
There were also more than 180 wounded, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday. A building of the Institute of Communications was partially destroyed in the attack.
The target of the attack was apparently a military training center in the city, but Zelensky said “an educational institution and a nearby hospital” were also hit.
Zelensky calls for more weapons
According to current information, several ballistic missiles hit the city. People were buried under the rubble of buildings. Ukrainian media published videos from the impact sites.
Poltava has been largely spared from the war so far:
Zelensky appealed to the West: to stop “this terror” Kiev would need large numbers of air defense systems and missiles in Ukraine – beyond the stockpiles. The Ukrainian president announced that “Russian scum” would pay for the violent attack.
“Long-range strikes that can protect us from Russian terror are needed now, not later. Every day of delay unfortunately means more lives lost,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Russia has recently stepped up airstrikes on Ukraine. Putin’s forces are also advancing rapidly in eastern Ukraine. On its own territory, the Ukrainian army is struggling to fend off the Russian army. This year, Ukraine’s territorial gains exceeded its territorial losses on just eight days — and even on those days, territorial gains were minimal, according to ISW data.
