War-torn Ukraine – 3 resignations filed: Kiev ahead of government restructuring

Date:

War-torn Ukraine is facing a government overhaul after three ministers resigned. Your request will be considered during the next parliamentary session, parliament speaker Ruslan Stefantschuk wrote on Facebook.

The ministers are Olexander Kamyshin, responsible for the arms industry, as well as Denys Maljuska (Justice) and Ruslan Strilez (Environment).

Further changes announced
The head of the State Property Fund, Vitaly Koval, who is responsible for privatizations, also wants to step down. The parliamentary group leader of the presidential party “Servant of the People”, David Arachamija, announced further changes in the cabinet. According to him, there will be new appointments in more than half of all ministries. The final list will be announced at the group meeting on Wednesday.

Electricity shortage
Earlier, it was reported that the head of electricity grid operator Ukrenerho, Volodymyr Kudrytskyj, had been dismissed by the state-owned company’s board. Kudrytskyj has headed Ukrenerho since 2020. However, he was recently accused of inadequate measures to protect the country’s substations from Russian drone and missile attacks. Since a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure early last week, Ukraine has again been experiencing hours of unplanned power outages due to the electricity shortage.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi had already announced a restructuring of the government in July. Five ministries are already headed by executive ministers. Ukraine has been fighting off a Russian invasion for more than two and a half years. The government led by Shmyhal has been in power since March 2020.
