A young hunter photographed a natural spectacle involving a grass snake and a toad in Leutasch in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land: Why the snake turned the garage into a hunting ground remains a mystery.
Homeowners in Leutasch witnessed a rare natural spectacle on Wednesday: a grass snake had converted the garage of the house into a hunting ground while the gate was open for an hour.
“When we wanted to drive out of the garage in the afternoon, we saw something dark on the ground that moved slightly,” the resident reports. “At first we suspected it was a slow worm. My girlfriend kept her distance, I got out of the car to check it.”
The young hunter held his nerve
Then he recognized a snake that had bitten a toad from behind: “I immediately took out the camera on my mobile phone and filmed the natural spectacle,” says the young hunter.
Path fought for her life
The grass snake apparently had great difficulty eating its prey. “After a while I wanted to carefully maneuver the snake and its prey out of the garage. Then she let go of the toad, which immediately fled. The snake also ran away and hid under the grate of a drain.” It is unclear why the garage in particular became the scene of the hunt. Perhaps the warm underside of the car was welcome for the toad – and also for the snake.
The non-venomous grass snake is one of the most common snake species in Austria. Their favorite prey are amphibians.
