Elias (8) reports fire – How two young boys were saved

Date:

Eight-year-old Elias demonstrated the right nose in Wilfersdorf in the Tulln district (Lower Austria). The boy ‘sniffed’ a fire on his neighbor’s property and immediately raised the alarm. Leon (15) also became a rescuer in Perchtoldsdorf near Mödling.

As is well known, anyone who helps quickly helps twice – and it is thanks to eight-year-old Elias that a garage fire in Wilfersdorf in the Tulln district did not end in an inferno. “Mom, the neighbor across the street smells strangely of smoke,” the elementary school pupil raised the alarm. And his mother reacted perfectly: she listened to her son, looked – and discovered that a car was on fire in the garage across the street.

She immediately called the emergency number and fire brigades from five cities rushed to the scene. And not a moment too soon, because the flames threatened not only to spread to the annex, but also to the house next door. The alerted Florianis were able to prevent this by extinguishing the fire with heavy breathing apparatus. 64 volunteers were deployed and one firefighter was injured. And yet: “Without the attentive nose of little Elias, everything could have been much worse,” said the comrades.

15-year-old Leon Heiss also showed moral courage in Perchtoldsdorf. As he boarded the bus, the neo-apprentice suddenly heard cries for help – the young firefighter immediately provided first aid to the fallen victim and started the rescue chain. During a visit to the control center location in Mödling, Leon was able to describe his experiences and impressions of the operation to the professionals. Quality Manager Lisa Widek listened to the emergency call again with Leon and explained the procedures for emergency operations to him.

Notruf Niederösterreich director Josef Schmoll presented the young rescuer and emergency caller with a certificate and the Notruf Niederösterreich Award for his courage and moral courage during this operation. “The most important thing is to be aware of an emergency, not to look away and to call 911 immediately. Our employees in the control center support every emergency caller and, in life-threatening operations, as in this case, remain on the phone until help arrives,” says Schmoll.
