While Corona seems to be a thing of the past for the federal government, doctors are struggling with rapidly rising figures.
Vice President of the Vienna Medical Association, Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied, sums it up: “The Covid wastewater figures are a disaster. This is going to overwhelm us and I am honestly afraid of the coming months.” Background: Corona tests have no longer been free since April 1. But only with such a positive test can doctors prescribe the effective Paxlovid.
“Many patients die from treatment”
Kamaleyan-Schmied: “Many of my patients cannot afford the test and therefore skip the treatment. It is a catastrophe.” The problem: The government has now turned its attention to the health insurance fund. And they are currently still negotiating with the medical association about the costs. ÖGK chairman Andreas Huss assures: “There will be an agreement – at least for high-risk patients.”
Negotiations have been going on for months
The last time it was said in mid-July was that a solution had been worked out, which was now being voted on in the committees. The chairman of the Social Insurers’ Conference, Peter Lehner, said in a written statement at the time that the “deadline” for presenting a solution would be early August.
