The fact that the symbols are to disappear from the wardrobes of the city kindergartens in Vienna is causing a great deal of commotion – even in politics. The “Krone” now publishes the statement of the responsible authority MA 10 on this.
After the commotion about the cloakroom symbols in the city’s kindergartens, politicians are now trying to get out of the affair. There is no official ban, says responsible education councillor Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos). Each kindergarten can decide this for itself.
That sounds like freedom of choice, but that is not the case. After the criticism of the past few days, we have now decided to publish the statement of the responsible body in its entirety. Because there is a clear specification of how the symbols should be dealt with.
The statement literally
“In some nursery schools it is still the practice to mark cloakrooms, belongings, works/drawings etc. with colourful symbols such as apple, house, sun, star. For years it has been experienced that children can better find their place, recognise their ‘own drawer’ or find their ‘symbol’ in a painting they have painted, so that they know that it is ‘their’ drawing.
We are in a process of debate in the municipal kindergartens and have set ourselves the task of reconsidering the colorful identification symbols, which in some places are already very old, and especially the way in which a child arrives at “his or her symbol”. The aim is to prevent children from being assigned symbols without thinking about them or children who come later from being given a “leftover” symbol with which they have no positive associations.
With the new form of labeling, hybrid forms, names with photos or all sorts of ideas are conceivable, which in any case deduce that a child cannot identify with a symbol that it has not chosen itself, such as a mushroom. , and then possibly tackle it as such (“…and our mushroom can now go into the garden…”). In addition, dealing with ‘one’s own’ photo or ‘one’s own’ drawing offers the individual child essential impulses for the subjective development of its personality. Fundamental learning opportunities arise here.”
Recommendation that you adopt
This recommendation is being adopted by kindergartens. You can see this in the example of Matteo’s kindergarten, where the mushroom symbol was taken away. The ladybug flies out of the closet forever.
