The residents of an apartment building in Linz are shocked after a mechanic suffered a fatal accident while working on the elevator. Rescuing the dead man was also stressful for the firefighters, but there was help for young comrades. An expert must now clarify why the accident happened.
Thick rain clouds hang over the apartment building on Makartstrasse in Linz a day after the fatal accident at work. On Wednesday around 8:30 a.m., a 30-year-old mechanic from Styria fell to his death while working on the building’s elevator with the elevator cabin.
Extremely loud bang heard
A number of residents were not home at the time, including a young woman we met at the door when we went to look at the building. “I was at work and only heard about the accident in the newspaper.” Everyone who was home spoke of an extremely loud bang.
“An accident is a catastrophe”
“We were immediately shocked,” says an elderly woman on the ground floor, and a woman from the third floor: “I said ‘good morning’ to the workers and half an hour later I had to go to the hospital for an appointment. When I was in the garden, there was a very loud bang.” The residents are exhausted, “this accident is a catastrophe,” she concludes.
But not everyone noticed the accident, one elderly person said: “I was still in bed.” The children from the school in the Herz-Jesu parish across the street also did not notice anything, as a church service was taking place at the time.
Stressful use
Comrades from the professional fire brigade of Linz had to rescue the victim from the elevator shaft. “That was stressful,” says operational manager Gerhard Krenn, “in the evening there was a crisis meeting for young colleagues.” First, an emergency doctor was sent down into the approximately three-meter deep pit, after which the Florianis detectives climbed to the dead man with ladders and then pulled him up on a stretcher.
The cause of the accident is still unclear
The mechanics are said to have been working in the residential complex for several days, as the elevators are routinely replaced there. A fatal accident occurred while dismantling a cabin. The Linz Public Prosecutor’s Office has appointed an expert to clarify the cause of the accident.
