Helicopters in the air, hundreds of firefighters on the ground: Hadersdorf (Lower Austria) was a hotspot for storm operations. The first ‘all-clear’ came on Tuesday morning.
All eyes have been on Hadersdorf am Kamp in recent days. Two disaster relief trains from Upper Austria are supporting local emergency services in securing a broken dam. On both sides, water is flowing from the Gschinzbach into the surrounding fields. 85 houses and 70 apartments in the community had to be evacuated.
3500 sandbags
In order to protect this settlement as best as possible, a wall with 3,500 sandbags was built in one night. “In the event of a dam breach, the settlement areas in Hadersdorf and Kammern and Straß in the Straßertale are threatened,” warned district fire chief Martin Boyer.
It didn’t get that far, partly because Black Hawk helicopters secured the dam with large packages of tons. But in the region, a fish pond in Bösendürnbach also had to be taken into account, which contains 90 million liters of water. Water from the pond is continuously drained.
“The battle is relaxed at the moment”
Mayor Heinrich Becker: “The camp is currently relaxed. If more rain falls, we have room to maneuver thanks to the storm surge barriers.” According to Becker, the situation could improve after the rain stops, and he also thanks the many volunteers who provided help during the difficult time.
The signal was given (for the first time) on Tuesday morning: According to Mayor Becker, the water levels have dropped and the dams have not collapsed.
