Since Saturday morning, a 70-year-old German hiker has been buried under an avalanche below the Binsalm in the Tyrolean Karwendel (municipality of Vomp). He cannot be searched for on Wednesday either.
According to Sandro Huber, local manager of the Achenkirch mountain rescue service, the avalanche danger is still too great. “On Tuesday, we flew through the area around the avalanche again with the Alpine police and came to the conclusion that the search had to be postponed further,” says Huber.
It also seems uncertain that the search can resume on Thursday. “I expect more on Friday,” Huber said.
Traveling with a walking group
As reported, the buried 70-year-old German was part of a hiking group of about 25 people who descended from the Binsalm towards Eng on Saturday morning. An avalanche hit the 70-year-old about 100 meters above the valley floor.
The rescuers were able to locate the man using the RECCO system, but had to stop the search soon after due to the risk of avalanches. A mountain rescuer was hit by an avalanche and partially buried. The man suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament.
