First everything clear in Lower Austria: floods: water levels are falling, but the suffering continues

Date:

On Thursday, 300 households in Lower Austria were evacuated and 117 people had to be rescued from danger zones by helicopter. And while ten cities are still cut off from the outside world, the disaster alert has been lifted elsewhere.

The further the water levels dropped throughout the country yesterday, the more visible the damage in the disaster area of Lower Austria became. “The flood situation is easing, but the damage and the suffering of the people remain,” says State Vice President Stephan Pernkopf, head of the crisis team.

In this unprecedented natural disaster, almost 40,000 emergency services have been deployed so far. “They have saved people, defended dams, helped families,” says Pernkopf proudly and gratefully. On Thursday, the focus remained on Tullnerfeld and Pielachtal, which were badly affected. In addition, the water level on the Leitha also rose and numerous dams had to be secured.

“Now the level is dropping here too,” says Pernkopf. However, the many landslides and mudflows are of crucial importance; the safety of the slopes still needs to be clarified in about 40 communities. To this end, the number of geological experts has been greatly increased.

Yesterday, around 300 houses and apartments were evacuated; the peak was just under 1,400 households. The Tulln fairground, which at peak times housed 658 people and 22 dogs, 17 cats and three small animals, is currently no longer needed as emergency accommodation. A total of 117 people had to be rescued from the floods by helicopter.

Seven districts are no longer disaster areas
The entire state was declared a disaster area this weekend. Based on a comprehensive analysis with the district governors, it was decided today to revoke the disaster area status in seven districts and three statutory cities.

“The status will be lifted in the districts of Amstetten, Hollabrunn, Lilienfeld, Mistelbach, Scheibbs, the district of Wiener Neustadt and Waidhofen an der Thaya. The municipal cities are Krems, Waidhofen/Ybbs and Wiener Neustadt. From 19:00, the status of disaster area will be lifted in these districts and municipalities,” said State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner.
