In Kirchdorf an der Krems, some adults are too eager to drive their protégés to the front of the local elementary school, so the city and the principal take action. It is about the safety of the little ones, assure the victims, who also asked the police for support.
Some parents may mean it a little too well: in Kirchdorf an der Krems, children are sometimes driven directly to the entrance of the primary school by the ‘parent taxi’, even though there are separate parking spaces where the children can get out. This can lead to dangerous traffic situations for children in the busy morning.
Often the presence of uniformed personnel is sufficient
That is why the city has even asked the executive branch for help: “It is forbidden to stop and park in the street where the elementary school is located. The police must monitor this more closely,” says acting deputy mayor Stipo Luketina (SPÖ). The police say: The mere presence of the uniformed people has an effect. In isolated cases, however, complaints have also been filed against parents.
Schools were merged
The elementary schools in Kirchdorf have been merged into one location this year: the number of pupils has doubled to almost 300 and the entrance area has become more compact – which has worsened the traffic situation. The recent heavy rainfall has probably contributed to parents increasingly driving their children to the door. Principal Christine Kerschbaummayr therefore wrote a letter to parents informing them about parking and drop-off areas.
VCÖ is appealing against this
“The safety of children is the highest priority. It is my duty to ensure that they can get to school safely.” Many parents also do their utmost to get their children to school on foot, but not all.
Of course, enthusiastic ‘parent taxis’ are not only a problem in Kirchdorf. The traffic club VCÖ calls for this not to happen. This not only deprives children of a daily dose of healthy exercise, but also teaches them correct behaviour in traffic.
