Germany switches to coal if gas supply stops

The government is thus responding to the decision of the Russian giant Gazprom to reduce gas deliveries via the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

“It’s bitter, but it’s essential to reduce gas consumption.” With these words, the German government announced this Sunday its decision to resort to coal, a fuel it had promised to cut by 2030, to risk a lack of energy supplies as a result of Russia’s austerity measures. The announcement was made by the economy minister, ecologist Robert Habeck, in a statement in which he expected a new law to this effect to come into force before the summer. “To reduce gas consumption, you need to use less to produce electricity. Instead, more coal-fired power plants should be used,” he said.

Germany is thus responding to the decision of the Russian giant Gazprom to reduce gas supplies via the Nord Stream gas pipeline, in the context of the energy pulse between western countries and Moscow. The company cut power by 40% due to a technical problem. For the executive headed by Olaf Scholz, it is a “political decision” by Russia. “We need not have any illusions, we are facing a showdown with Putin,” he warned.

The package of measures announced this Sunday will also prioritize replenishing gas supplies before winter. Reserves are currently at 56%, a level “higher than the average of recent years”.

Faced with the urgency of the situation, the German government also wants to emphasize energy conservation. Last week, the minister discussed initiatives, such as imposing a limit on the heating of homes. But Scholz spoke out against discussing “individual measures” with no definite plan.
