Badly affected – flood: “I don’t even have socks anymore!”

Date:

Local inspection “Krone” of the severely affected flood victims in Penzing. The financial aid of the city of Vienna is now starting.

Irmgard Slanar stands in front of her house and shakes her head. “The flood has destroyed almost everything. We don’t know what to do now,” the 66-year-old begins to say. The water in their wooden house was 1.50 meters high after the Vienna River burst its banks. The entire basement was flooded. The heat pump and the technology are gone. In the background, two workers are busy removing stubborn mud from the once beautiful garden.

Vienna got off relatively lightly during the floods. But here in Penzing, in the Hadersdorf-Weidlingau district, the enormous amounts of rain caused great damage. In Ludwiggasse, around 100 people had to be evacuated by the fire brigade. The city’s mobile operations centre has been located nearby since Wednesday, at Herzmanskystrasse 12.

The first people affected by the floods are already waiting there for the local inspection “Krone”. From 9:00 to 18:00, the bus of the direct action group will serve as a contact station. Members of the response team will help you fill out the claim form. If the claim is confirmed and supplemented by the Flood Commission, financial support will be provided via instructions from the Ministry of Finance (MA 5). Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) has ensured that Vienna… The maximum quota was reached up to 50 percent – with a cap on the damage amount of 100,000 euros – we reported.

Harald Havlicek (67) also had a particularly hard time. The pensioner lives on the ground floor in Alois-Czedik-Gasse, right next to the Vienna River. The four walls became uninhabitable on September 15. He woke up at 5 a.m. and was already standing in water up to his ankles.

“I knew I had to leave immediately. Now I don’t even have socks!” said the pensioner, still shocked. Since then, he has been staying with a neighbor. The garage of the house also filled up. A car and a motorcycle are broken down. But the home insurance clears itself up.

Back to Mrs. Slanar. After the visit of the Flood Commission, she seems to be somewhat relieved for the first time. After an initial check, she was promised 70,000 euros in financial aid. A first glimmer of hope.
