This year’s May will go down in history: for the first time in years, no high-ranking politician in Austria has resigned. In previous years it was different, especially in 2017: first Reinhold Mitterlehner (ÖVP) left, then Sebastian Kurz took over and called new elections – and then the then Green Party leader Eva Glawischnig threw her hat. You can read what has happened since then in the Greens’ election special.
In 2012, a small group ventured into federal politics with a new party – as a liberal alternative to the established major parties, the NEOS formed around Matthias Strolz from Vorarlberg and Veit Dengler from Styria. Initially it was thought that the new party did not have much of a chance, but when it first stood as a candidate for the National Council elections in 2013, it managed to win nine MPs. Will the Pinks reach the 10 percent mark this time?
