Just over six months ago, the Diesterwegschule in Linz made the news. Shots were fired at the building that night. Now there is the next act of vandalism with enormous material damage. Outside school hours, a sink was blocked and the hallway flooded.
A burglary combined with an act of vandalism at the Diesterwegschule in Linz last weekend caused massive property damage, which will result in longer repairs and costs in the high Eurozone. The perpetrators blocked an upstairs sink while the water was running, causing significant damage and requiring major renovation.
Only the quick action of the school team could prevent even greater damage. The police are investigating.
Vice mayor Dietmar Prammer (SP), responsible for school maintenance, and councilor for safety Michael Raml (FP) discussed further measures with the police, school management and experts from the magistrate during a local inspection on Monday.
“This deliberate and senseless act of destruction must be condemned in its entirety. In addition to the adjustment work decided in February – including a new security gate – the city of Linz is now evaluating further measures in coordination with the school management and the police. My thanks go to the quick and courageous action of the school principals and teaching staff. They immediately found alternative spaces for the affected classes, so that lessons could run smoothly,” Prammer emphasizes.
“The schools in Linz are not only a place where knowledge is transferred, they must also be places of safety. As a school provider, the city must take all available safety measures to prevent such acts. This week, together with the police and school management, we will take further rapid steps, such as video surveillance of the school grounds,” says Raml.
Security measures almost complete
The incidents mentioned in February this year have led to additional security measures being taken to make it more difficult for people from outside the school to enter the school. The main entrance to the school must be made more secure, the entrance on Ziekenhuisstraat must be equipped with an electric sliding gate and an additional gate must limit access to the after-school area. The current incident occurred shortly before the work was completed.
