Déjà vu in the National Gallery in London: activists from the group ‘Just Stop Oil’ threw soup on two paintings by Vincent van Gogh on Friday. This is the second time one of them has been targeted in such an attack.
The painting from the Dutch artist’s Sunflower series from 1888 was showered with orange soup in October 2022. Nearly two years later, it is unlikely that security measures have been particularly tightened. Because three activists managed to defile the masterpiece again and another from the series.
Other visitors reacted angrily
The other visitors to the art museum were furious. She seemed to say ‘no’ and ‘don’t do that’ after the action. The activist explains to the angry crowd: “There are people in jail for calling for an end to oil and gas production, which after sustained, disruptive actions, countless headlines and the resulting political pressure is now government policy.”
“Future generations will view these prisoners of conscience as people on the right side of history,” the report said.
The three activists from the organization ‘Just Stop Oil’ were arrested after the new attack on suspicion of damaging property. The affected paintings were removed for examination and were left undamaged, the BBC reported, citing the National Gallery.
The protest came almost an hour after the conviction of activists who carried out the 2022 attack on the Sunflower painting. The damage to the frame amounted to approximately £10,000. A 23-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison, and a 22-year-old co-defendant was sentenced to 20 months.
