Park visitors watched – Schönbrunn Zoo: baby orangutan born

Date:

An orangutan baby was born in the Schönbrunn Zoo on Sunday at 1.30 pm in the presence of park visitors. What’s special: There has been no successful breeding of the orangutans in the zoo for almost 20 years.

The Tiergarten team is also very happy with the lovely offspring. “It is the first cub for 13-year-old Sari, who came to us from Dublin Zoo in 2020. She takes good care of her little one, who sleeps in her arms most of the day,” explains the zoological curator in charge, Folko Balfanz.

Gender still unclear
Now we have to keep our fingers crossed that the orangutan baby develops well in the coming months. Because of course the first rearing is always accompanied by a certain degree of uncertainty. Keepers will not be able to determine whether the young animal is a female or a male until the next few days. Vladimir is the only male among the orangutans and despite his advanced age of 48 years he is still very active in breeding.

“Vladimir and the rest of the group are interested in the latest addition. In the case of the orangutans, however, the mothers take care of their offspring all by themselves,” says Balfanz.

Orangutan facility is constantly being upgraded
“Over the past few years, we have continuously modernized the orangutan enclosure to make it even more natural for our animals. When the two females, Sari and Surya, came to live about two years ago, a well-functioning social group emerged. We are very happy that all these efforts are now bearing fruit in the offspring,” says zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
