On Sunday there was a fatal swimming accident in the inland water basin of Harder. A 22-year-old man fell from his stand-up paddleboard (SUP) into the water, where he sank, believed to be due to a lack of swimming ability.
On Sunday around 4.30 pm an emergency call was given that a person had fallen into the water in the Harder inner basin. The search operation that was launched was quickly successful and the 22-year-old who died in the accident was rescued in a water depth of four to five meters and taken to shore. There the man was first successfully resuscitated and taken by rescue helicopter C8 to the state hospital Feldkirch.
Fell off board
However, the 22-year-old died in intensive care as a result of the accident. An interrogation revealed that the young man, who could not swim, had borrowed a standing paddle. As a result, he fell off the board and went under despite desperate attempts to swim.
The operation involved: the Austrian Water Rescue Service (ÖWR) with one boat, four vehicles and 30 emergency services, the Austrian Red Cross (ÖRK) with three vehicles, two emergency doctors and eight emergency services, and the police with one boat, four vehicles and twelve officers and two Libelle and C8 helicopters.
