North Korean artillery shells and rockets have been raining down on Ukrainian cities for months; the Stalinist Kim regime in Pyongyang is one of Putin’s most important partners, besides Iran. The first have already fallen in Ukraine, and some have apparently been abandoned. Krone+ analyzes the background.
Early October in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region of Ukraine. A Ukrainian missile hits a Russian base, killing or wounding soldiers. According to Ukrainian and South Korean sources, six North Korean soldiers are among them. North Korean officers to be precise – their deaths are also confirmed by sources from Russia. The visit to Donetsk was probably intended to become familiar with the battlefield and to learn Russian military tactics. “Unfortunately there was a rocket attack on the training ground. In total, twenty people died, six of whom were our friends: officers from North Korea,” a Russian military blogger wrote after the attack. But the fallen officers are just the tip of an iceberg.
