Drug-addicted young people are becoming increasingly common. This is also the case in Tyrol. Lately there have been repeated problems with aid organizations. The Greens are therefore calling for a social strategy in the country. The youth facility “Chill-Out” can defuse the situation.
Mixed drug use and overdoses – more and more young people in Tyrol are endangering their own lives through drugs. Not only is this evident from a number of “Tiroler Krone” reports, Elisabeth Harasser, former child and youth lawyer for Tyrol, also recorded this this year. They are clear that there is a link between substance use and trauma, experiences of violence and other threats to children’s well-being. Children and young people are admitted to the clinic three to five times a week after serious drug use. The trend is increasing.
Association for Youth in Emergency Situations can provide peace of mind
But what is it like in Tyrol? Where can young people go when their own home becomes unbearable? There always seem to be problems with care in Tyrol: in 2021, the state contract with the youth facility “Das Netz” had to be concluded after economic inconsistencies, where up to 42 young people were cared for; The SOS Children’s Village had to intervene. In 2024, the ‘youth country’ will be in trouble.
However, an investigation into the association “Chill-Out” for young people in emergency situations could defuse the situation: there are currently five young people on the waiting list, but they are already receiving outpatient care. In fact, many children and young people need support, but the offers are well received and there is good communication with politicians. The Greens are still calling for a social strategy. As a first step, the party calls for an investigation into security of supply. The responsible SPÖ-LR Eva Pawlata sees a good offer of help in Tyrol. “Child and youth welfare is at the top of my political agenda. I have been able to get an idea of many facilities and can say that very good and essential work is being done there. Strengthening these structures will be a focus in the 2025 budget.”
