The decision came after a court in Rome declared the migrants’ detention in Albania illegal and ordered their return, arguing that the countries of origin of these people are not safe.
The 12 migrants who returned through Albania after Italy suspended their transfer left the Albanian port of Shengjin on an Italian coast guard ship on Saturday morning bound for the port of Bari.
This decision came after a court in Rome declared illegal the detention in Albania of the migrants brought from Italy this week and ordered their return, arguing that the countries of origin of these people, Bangladesh and Egypt, were not considered safe can be considered.
Four of the sixteen asylum seekers had previously been transferred to Italy, because that is the case two minors and two other people stated vulnerable.
The court in Rome has quashed the police arrest warrant against the migrants (at least four according to the ruling) so that they cannot be detained. Likewise, he claims that only in Italy is the freedom to which migrants are entitled guaranteed.
Giorgia Meloni has said she will appeal the ruling and will hold a special cabinet meeting on Monday. “I don’t think it is the job of the judiciary to decide which countries are safe, it is the job of the government,” Meloni said.
