900 meters for 6 million euros – cost horror: is this the most expensive cycle path in Tyrol?

Date:

The first plans already existed when calculations were still made in Schillings. The start of the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle connection in the Wildschönau has now been confirmed and will significantly empty the public coffers. Is this the most expensive route in Tyrol?

“Yes, that was a disappointment,” says Mayor Hannes Eder of Wildschönau about the new cost estimate of six million euros. In the autumn of 2023, another 3.3 million euros was estimated. Ultimately, the attitude within the municipal council was: we have to grit our teeth and get through with this, otherwise the project will never come to fruition. After all, the country promises to cover 70 percent of the costs.

Gorgeous route, life-threatening so far
In concrete terms, it is only 900 meters between Mühltal and Oberau. Partly a stretch of gorge with a narrow national road, which until now has been life-threatening for pedestrians and cyclists.

Many experts for technical challenges
To describe the project as “technically complex” is probably an understatement. What was needed was clearing work, extensive soil exploration (excavations) and a bridge at the Talmühle (the path crosses over that to the stream side).

Various experts racked their brains on statics, geology, natural history, water ecology and even torrent and avalanche control. Ultimately it became clear that 1,800 m² of shotcrete protection was needed and that 1,600 m³ of the poor subsurface had to be replaced.

Construction time only during low water periods
The award process is in the final phase. “The planned start is November 4. You are not allowed to build on the stream between May and September,” says the village boss. Is this the most expensive cycle path in Tyrol? Director of State Building Christian Molzer about the “Krone”: “No, we are in the mountainous area, there are many challenging cycle paths.”

Downhill cycling still on the road
But the gist of the multi-million Wildschönau project is: cyclists must continue to use the national road (L3) towards the valley, otherwise they will dangerously get in the way of pedestrians.
