The first phase of the 2024/25 school year will be completed on Friday and the week-long autumn holidays are approaching. The school-free days bring calm weather with high fog and sunshine. Perfect conditions also exist in the mountains. A reason to unpack your shoes and go for a walk.
The weather couldn’t be more typical of fall. In the lowlands, high fog often causes cloudy hours and the sun must first prevail over the gray. But the mountains and hills will receive plenty of sunshine in the coming days. The southern Foehn wind also brings very mild air here.
Temperature level too high again
However, the temperature level during the autumn holidays remains significantly too high for the time of year. This means that it is already clear: October will once again be too mild a month. In Innsbruck there have already been 10 days with 20 degrees or more, on average there are only six in October.
In the lowlands it is usually fog
High pressure will control our weather well into next week, and this weekend the Southern Föhn will also be involved. In the lower areas, such as around Lake Constance, in Flachgau, along the Danube and in the eastern lowlands, but also in the valleys in the south, it will probably be foggy almost every day during the autumn holidays. The fog can linger all day in some places and cause cloudy weather. The best chance of sun in these areas is in the afternoon.
Seven degrees too much for the time of year
However, the weather in the mountains is completely opposite. Especially in the northern Alps from the Rätikon to the Mariazellerland. Fog is only a problem here for a short time, otherwise the sun will often shine in the coming days. It should be above 20 degrees again, 7 degrees too much for this time of year. The conditions are therefore perfect for hiking: even at an altitude of 2000 meters, temperatures can sometimes reach double figures on the local peaks.
Lovely weather on Sunday
The Alpine Skiing World Cup also starts at the weekend with the women’s giant slalom on the national holiday and the counterpart for Marcel Hirscher and Co. on Sunday. The weather looks to be much better for the male contemporaries as clouds build up from the south on Saturday on the main Tyrolean Alpine ridge. These can, at least sometimes, extend all the way to the slopes (keyword: foehnmuur) and restrict visibility.
The weather will be beautiful on Sunday, with lots of sun and a light wind, reaching a very mild 7 degrees.
