Around Christmas, a radical Islamist group is said to have planned attacks in Europe, including on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The investigation has now been stopped. Particularly explosive: one of the suspects died in custody.
The Vienna public prosecutor’s office has stopped the investigation due to a lack of suspicion, the “Kurier” reported on Friday. The Public Prosecution Service could not be reached for confirmation on Friday evening.
Suspects immediately taken into custody
Four main suspects from terrorist organizations have been investigated in connection with terrorist crimes. At the end of May, the four suspects were released after several months of detention due to a lack of strong suspicion and immediately taken into custody to await deportation. The reason given was “significant potential for danger”.
Suspect found dead in cell
A man was found dead in his cell just hours before he was due to be deported to Dagestan. The authorities assumed it was suicide. The remaining people were deported in the first half of the year.
