Israeli forces killed a senior member of the terrorist organization Hamas in the West Bank on Saturday morning. Islam Jamil Odeh is planning attacks in the near future, say the Israeli army, the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service and police.
Both Israel and the military wing of Hamas describe the murdered man as the leader of the al-Qassam Brigades in the city of Tulkarem. The Ministry of Health in Ramallah confirmed the death of the 29-year-old. Israel had already killed his predecessor during an operation in early October.
During the operation in the town in the northwestern Palestinian territory, Odeh opened fire on Israeli security forces as they surrounded him, the army said in a statement. The emergency services returned fire and killed the Hamas commander.
The already tense situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly since the Hamas massacre a year ago and the resulting Gaza war. Since then, some 727 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, armed clashes and attacks by extremists in Ramallah, according to the Health Ministry.
