In Jochberg, part of the famous Kitzbühel ski area, winter conditions are still far away – but skiers and snowboarders can already race down a narrow slope there. A TikTok video (see below) of the snow strip on Green Mountain is currently heating up people’s minds.
Just in time for the start of the winter sports season, a debate has broken out about the usefulness of narrow, artificial snow tires on the Tyrolean mountains.
Criticism: “Forcing winter by force”
A TikTok video showing a narrow strip of snow in the city of Jochberg is causing a stir in the online community. “Just sick,” one user wrote under the post. “Forcing winter with all your might,” another commented on the video. Another criticizes: “And thousands of liters of diesel are wasted.”

The narrow snow strip is possible thanks to snow recycling: the white splendor from last season was kept on the Resterkogel and used for the ski slopes at the beginning of November.
But not all reactions are negative. “Snow from last year? What’s the big deal,” asks a TikTok user. “Nothing is forced. This is snow left over from last year. It was isolated over the summer and has now been distributed,” another explained.
Ski clubs are happy with the travel and time savings
Since November 8, the slopes on the Resterkogel have been accessible not only to young racers and squad athletes, but also to amateur athletes. Local sports clubs cannot understand the excitement: „We always go into the snow with children and students at the beginning of November, so the route on the Resterkogel saves us many kilometers of travel and time.” explained Christine Pletzer-Hörl from the Kitzbühel Ski Club to the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”.
According to Reinhard Klier, board member of the Stubai Glacier Railways and spokesperson for the Tyrolean cable cars, the use of stored snow is harmless to the environment: no chemicals or electricity are used to produce snow. He advocates that every operator decides for himself when the season starts.
