According to a recent survey, the majority of EU citizens support an accelerated enlargement of the EU because of the war in Ukraine. In Austria, however, the mood is different: 45 percent of those polled in this country are in favor of rapid admission of new countries, 50 percent reject it and five percent are undecided.
In the Eurobarometer survey commissioned by the EU parliament, 58 percent of respondents in the EU spoke out in favor of faster admission of new members to the EU in view of the war in Ukraine. 36 percent are against the EU average.
Austria at the other end of the scale
The EU countries with the highest support for faster EU enlargement are Poland (80 percent), Ireland (77 percent), Lithuania (75 percent), Spain (74 percent) and Croatia (71 percent). Austria is at the other end of the scale. Only in Slovakia (36 percent), in Bulgaria (40 percent) and in Slovenia (44 percent) fewer respondents than in Austria support accelerating the admission of new countries to the EU. In Germany, approval is 53 percent higher than in France (47 percent).
For the survey, 26,580 interviews were conducted across Europe in April and May, including 1,005 in Austria.
