Climate crisis unchecked – Thunberg: “We are approaching the abyss”

Date:

In a surprising appearance at the famous Glastonbury Festival in England, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg called for greater commitment to the climate. “We are approaching the abyss,” the 19-year-old said Saturday afternoon on the main stage, where ex-Beatle Paul McCartney would later appear.

She urges anyone whose senses have not yet been clouded by greenwashing to make a statement. “Don’t let us get an inch closer to the abyss. Because that’s where we are now,” she said, according to the British news agency PA.

The Swedish initiator of the Fridays for Future movement regularly accuses politicians and business of trying to cover up their lack or slow action on climate protection with eloquent statements of intent.

Measures are far from enough
So far, the measures taken by the states are far from sufficient to achieve the agreed Paris climate target to stop global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees. Climate researchers agree that this is the only way to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.
