Christmas wishes do not bring reflection to the judiciary; the minister advocates ‘gender-fair language’. The misdirected email from a judge at the Vienna Commercial Court is currently causing a stir at the Ministry of Justice.
Because the Honorable Mr. Rat did not send his Christmas wishes, garnished with sharp gender criticism, to a small group, but to “all in righteousness.”
The salutation is truly impressive (see also fragment on the right): “Greetings, dear colleagues and employees!” It continues with “Now let’s give ourselves a Christmas present and get our beautiful language back.” Because this is constantly being messed up and destroyed by ‘correctness stampers and colon writers’.
“Language is the lawyer’s tool”
“After all, language is something beautiful and the lawyer’s instrument,” the judge continues in his rejection of gender. The electronic letter ends with: “With this in mind, I wish all colleagues and employees a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
Justice Minister Alma Zadić (Greens) did not let that rest and responded with “some thoughts on the topic of inclusive language”. In addition to wishes for a “contemplative and peaceful Christmas season,” she defended gender in the ministerial email: “Especially in the judiciary, our goal every day in our work is to protect the rights of all people in this country. This should also be reflected in our language use.” As a state institution, “the judiciary must take the lead here and show that it is there for everyone equally.”
It therefore seems questionable whether there will be peace before Christmas when it comes to gender in ministry…
