Scary attack by cybercriminals on a doctor’s office in the Mostviertel! The perpetrators have confiscated all (patient) data and are now demanding a high ransom from the doctor.
The doctor in question is deeply shocked. Because the perpetrators operating from the Darknet had struck out of nowhere. The internationally operating cyber criminals had essentially ‘encrypted’ all files, including all stored patient files and other sensitive information. The victim – a highly renowned doctor with hundreds of patients – had to close his practice until further notice.
Demand for ransom in Bitcoins
Clear threat from the attackers that appeared on the screen when the computer was turned on: “If you see this, your files are no longer accessible. Don’t even try to decrypt your backup system, you’ll just waste your time. The only ones who can do this are us!” What followed: a $30,000 ransom demand, payable in Bitcoins! The extortionists agreed to negotiate with them and reduced demand, but otherwise they remained and remain harsh. This one intrusion into someone else’s computer system could have happened randomly. As the “Krone” has learned confidentially from researchers, there are probably even more affected people throughout the Mostviertel. This is a major attack.
Firewalls did not stop the perpetrators
What shocked the victim, who had previously installed every conceivable firewall, including backups, about the case: “Health care institutions were until now considered taboo and largely spared from cybercrime.”
Appeal to the Medical Chamber
The internationally experienced Viennese “Krone” cybersecurity expert Dr. Cornelius Granig assists those affected. His urgent request to the room: “Doctors need more support and instructions from above. Because it can be assumed that these criminals’ attacks on ordinations are increasing.” The hacked person has now filed a report.
