Taiwan has increased its alert due to a major exercise by the Chinese navy.
China has deployed nearly 90 naval and coast guard ships, two-thirds of them warships, in a wide swath near Taiwanese waters, southern Japan islands and the East and South China Seas, a Taiwanese security official told Reuters news agency on Monday. No statement has yet been received from the Chinese Ministry of Defense.
The maneuver is not entirely unexpected after Taiwanese President Lai Ching Te visited Hawaii and the US island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. China has responded several times with saber-rattling to such visits or contacts between the US and democratically ruled Taiwan, which considers the People’s Republic part of the country.
Increased alertness
China has already carried out two maneuvers this year. But these were not as large as this time, a security representative in Taiwan explained. China set up seven temporary reserved airspaces east of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces from Monday to Wednesday, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense.
Taiwan’s military said it had increased alert at strategic points. The coast guard and navy are closely monitoring Chinese activities. It warned China against unilateral steps that could endanger peace.
