Chancellor says G7 countries will not agree to gold embargo against Russia
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned today of a world split from the war in Ukraine as the second day of the G7 summit begins in the German city of Elmau, in the Bavarian Alps. “We must not fall into the trap of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who claims that the world is divided into the global West and everyone else,” Scholz told German public television ZDF morning news. “There are democracies all over the world and they all have similar perspectives,” said the host of the meeting, which is also attended by the heads of state and governments of the United States, Canada, France, Britain, Italy and Japan. The German CEO assured that for that reason he had also invited the heads of state and government of Argentina, India, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa to the meeting in Elmau. The leaders of these countries, who abstained in the UN General Assembly vote condemning the invasion of Ukraine in early March, will take part in a meeting with their G7 colleagues this Tuesday. Scholz stressed that it is important to discuss this issue with all these countries.
The foreign minister also stressed that the G7 countries will not agree on a gold embargo against Russia, one of the world’s largest producers of the precious metal, during their summit in Bavaria. Scholz emphasized that the issue should be discussed in advance within the European Union. The United States had previously announced it would impose an embargo on Russian gold and invited its G7 partners to join the new sanction against the Moscow regime. The head of the German government has been equally hesitant about proposals such as not attending the G20 summit in Indonesia next fall if the Russian president is present. After noting that the decision on his presence in Indonesia will be taken shortly before the summit, he stressed the importance of cooperation between the industrialized and emerging countries that are part of that group and stated that “we must not torpedo the G20”.
