In large parts of Tyrol they simply belong, such as the Amen in prayer: the mountain fires on the Sacred Heart of Jesus weekend. A dangerous incident occurred in Fiss (Landeck district) on Sunday. Presumably due to gasoline fumes, there was a violent explosion and then a blaze. The fire brigade had to come.
Already in the afternoon a group had started preparations for the traditional fire in the vicinity of the Fisser”Obsteinbodens” started. Her plan was to make an approximately 2.5 meters high in the evening to ignite the wooden pyramid, which is then visible from far into the valley.
Poured gasoline and laid a track
“To make it easier to ignite the wooden pyramid, some petrol was poured at the base and a track about ten meters long of petrol was laid to ignite the wooden structure from a safe distance,” the police said. But the plan went horribly wrong!
When one of the group set fire to the petrol track around 9:45 PM, there was a violent explosion as the fire reached the pyramid and the wooden structure burst into flames within a very short time. But that’s not all: a wildfire broke out in the area as burning planks and pieces of wood were thrown away.
50 Floriani disciples arrived
The group immediately made an emergency call. The fire brigade of Fiss and Serfaus came with about 50 emergency services and eventually managed to extinguish the fire. Fortunately no one was injured. The police assume that petrol vapors have formed at the base of the pyramid, which have ignited explosively. Further investigations are still ongoing.
