In an interview with krone.tv, Jürgen Czernohorszky, Vienna’s city councilor for environment and climate protection, analyzes the findings of the thousand-year flood of the Vienna River in September: “You saw how important a well-developed infrastructure is. Czernohorszky adds: „Yet we continue to invest: in the coming years, a nine-kilometer-long tunnel, almost the size of a metro tube, will be bored under the Vienna River. This will further increase the water holding capacity of the Vienna River.” In addition to flood protection, environmentally conscious energy supply is also the order of the day in Vienna: “We invest a lot in expanding the insulation of buildings.
This means that Vienna has already managed to reduce one-fifth of residential energy consumption. The city of Vienna is also currently investing a lot of money in expanding cycle paths. Five times as many cycle paths are currently being constructed as in previous years. The metro expansion is also a multi-billion dollar investment with the U2/U5 junction, allowing the metro to reach more distant urban areas in the future. There are currently more renovations taking place in Vienna than ever before. You see that everywhere in the city.”
In principle, they want to reach the people with all measures: “We pursue a policy of outstretched hands and do not want a policy of finger wagging.” In general, the environmental measures are on the right track: “Vienna is Austria’s champion when it comes to CO2 reduction.
The so-called ‘NowCast’ of the Federal Environment Agency shows a CO2 reduction of 11.7 percent for Vienna in 2022/2023. This is almost double the Austria-wide decline of 6.7 percent and is the result of our mission-oriented policy.”
